“That’s lower than a snake’s belly in a wagon rut,” Lary often says.
In the past two years, I have accompanied him to numerous countries around the globe, filming and photographing his adventures. We have become friends, fellow adventurers, and while on safari, he is my adopted Bush Father.
Truly a self made man, he has paved his way to success with a recipe of honesty, integrity, hard work, and a charming personality bigger than Texas itself. From the humble beginnings of living in a trailer and selling coffins door to door, he has since found wild success in business, and just finished building the home of his dreams for the family. He is the embodiment of the American Dream.
Among the countless things I have learned from being around him are a few sayings of his Grandmother’s, who raised him as a boy. “Good intentions have the same look as nothing,” and “I can’t hear you because your actions speak so loudly,” she used to say.
This philosophy of not talking about doing, but actually doing, is part of what has made him so successful, and is the very virtue that has inspired me to do the same. I have done my best to follow this credo, of talking less, and doing more, and can only hope that it brings me one iota of the success of my friend and mentor Lary.
And as I move forward, patiently awaiting my destiny, I try to be honest, work hard, and have faith. Until then, as Lary would say, “keep your powder dry and shoot straight.”
