Pictory Magazine: For the Love of the Game

Though I missed the deadline to submit a photo for Pictory Magazine’s latest showcase, I managed to see at the last minute that Laura Brunow Miner still needed some twitter input.

Luckily for me, my hometown team the Dallas Mavericks had just won their first NBA championship in franchise history, giving me an easy topic of discussion. These words just rolled off of my fingertips, and ended up being almost exactly 140 characters.

It was meant to be.

Congratulations to the Dallas Mavericks, and to Laura Brunow Miner on yet another beautiful and inspiring showcase.

The rest of the showcase can be read on Pictory here.

Emerica’s Wild in the Streets

Having a younger brother who is deeply entrenched in skate culture, I knew about today’s skate mob in downtown Los Angeles.

Organized annually in a select city by the skate brand Emerica, Wild in the Streets is a mass gathering of skateboarders, led by Andrew Reynolds, who take to the streets with their boards by the thousands.

I was walking to lunch in downtown LA when I saw a mob of about 40 skaters fly by. I ran back to get my camera, caught up with them a few blocks later, and managed to get a few shots. Unfortunately, I was not able to photograph the entire throng of skaters, as they were headed miles away, and I was on foot (and wearing moccasins at that).

I did, however, catch these LAPD officers “protecting & serving” by handing out tickets for “skateboarding on the street.”

Apparently, skateboarding is a crime in downtown LA.

Emerica’s website is here and both Altamont and Emerica were tweeting updates as the day went on, with some pretty epic photos of the streets being blocked by thousands of skaters.

Keep your eyes open for next year’s event, it may be coming to your city.

Phoot Camp 2011

I am honored to say that I was invited to this year’s Phoot Camp in Marfa, Texas.

For those of you who aren’t familiar with the concept, you should visit the site, and read more about it. In short, it is a prestigious gathering of photographers from all over the world to connect and collaborate. You might even call it a weekend camp for photographers, but with lots of photo gadgets, props, and brilliant people.

This year the backdrop is in the art vortex of Marfa in West Texas, and we have a great group of people who are trekking in RV caravans to get there. From June 2nd-5th, 32 of us will be shooting up the town, and doing our best to leave a photographic legacy behind. Being a Texan, I promised to do what I could to make sure that my fellow Phoot Campers did the things we all expect to do in Texas; ride a horse, shoot a gun, and eat a rattlesnake.

Regardless, it should be an amazing weekend, and I am sure that I will make a handful of new friends. Keep your eyes open for the work that is produced over that weekend, and the collaborative projects that result.

Pictory Magazine: Featured Contributor

After having 10 stories published on Pictory, it seems that I got their attention enough to interview me as a featured contributor. Answering a few questions and choosing accompanying photos never seemed so hard, as this was my first interview for a widely read publication.

I can only hope that this will garner some appreciation and respect for the work that I have done thus far, and perhaps even lead to new opportunities.

The full interview can be read here.

Pictory Magazine: Guide to New Zealand

My 10th contribution to Pictory Magazine was selected last week, about an assignment I had in New Zealand. This photo was taken out the back door of the lodge I was staying at in the Rangitata River Valley on the south island. You may recognize its’ striking beauty from Lord of the Rings…

Many of the scenic shots were filmed in this mountain range, and the Golden Hall of Edoras was built in this very river valley, as well as most of the shots of Rohan and the galloping horse lords.

Yes, I am a Lord of the Rings geek, but that doesn’t make the place any less beautiful.

Thanks to Laura Brunow Miner for continuing to decide that my work is worth publishing. The rest of the New Zealand showcase can be seen here.

Pictory Magazine: Secrets of Inspiring Women

Nueve cuentos publicados en Pictory. OlĂ©! (My 9th story was published in Pictory Magazine). Though I don’t feel that I revealed any secrets, I was happy to be able to share my story of my friend Sarah Jane Semrad, and her influence in my life in Dallas. Story #17 of the showcase, which can be viewed in full here.
